Sermon Questions: Romans 11:33-36 (Part 3)

Why do you think Paul breaks out in praise to God’s glory before he even gets to the end of his letter? What moves him to praise? What moves you to praise of God?

All things are FROM him. How does keeping this in mind change how you view your possessions, talents, opportunities, and abilities? What kind of life does it lead you to live?

All things are THROUGH him. God is not some distant creator who made the world and walked away. How do you understand God sustaining your life? How have you personally experienced His presence sustaining you in some issue, trial, or situation?

All things are TO him. If God is the ultimate destination and purpose of everything, then how do your daily choices, career, relationships point “to him?” What is one area of your life that feels difficult to align with this purpose of living for God’s glory?

Our sinful nature, and culture, would have us believe that all things are from us, through us, and to us. What are some warning signs in your life, or attitudes, or stress levels, that indicate you have slipped into that mindset?

What does it look like to “give God glory” in the ordinary things of your life, like doing house or yard work, driving in traffic, answering emails, or spending money and time?

Paul ends this doxology with an “Amen” (which means “so be it” or “It is true”). Which of these three truths - that God is your source (from Him), that God is your sustainer (through Him), or that God is your goal (to Him) - do you need to say a fresh “amen” to in your life this week?

I praise God for you church, for being so hungry and attentive to God’s Word. One of my greatest joys in ministry has been to preach to this congregation so eager to know God through his word.

I love you dearly. May God richly bless and strengthen you with the joy of the truth of this Romans 11:36 doxology.

If our life truly comes “from Him,” what are you doing with the life you’ve been given? Are you living intentionally, or just drifting?

Is there anything you are holding onto as if it is from you, belongs to you, and you must protect it, perhaps even from God (time, money, control, relationships, plans, etc…)?

What are the good things from him that you have given thanks for lately?

What are the difficult things, perhaps even severe mercies that have come from God, and how is he sustaining you in them? Can you discern any purposes of God in them for you, drawing you nearer or sanctifying you in some way?

Where in your life are you trying to rely on yourself instead of trusting God to work “through” you? What would surrender to Him look like in that area?

What is cordless Christianity? Do you ever fall into that type of living?

When things don’t make sense, do you trust that God is still working “through" it all?

What’s the difference between living for Jesus and living through/with Jesus? What is an area or circumstance in your life where you need to rest in Jesus and allow him to live/work through you.

What is most difficult for you to remember (and believe) about God?

What in this Doxology of Paul’s speaks to what you struggle to remember?

In what ways do you question or doubt God’s wisdom, knowledge ,and the riches of his grace? (Hint - think of what you worry and fret over, complain about, etc…)

What are some ways you have experienced or observed the wisdom and knowledge of God in your life? Has God ever surprised you in the way he worked?

Read through Isaiah 40:12-31. How does Isaiah help flesh out God’s greatness when Isaiah (and Paul) asks: “Who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?” How does Isaiah 40 practically speak to you and to our world today with regard to God’s wisdom and knowledge.

How should verses 33-34 of Romans 11 shape our humility? What about our trust in the Lord?

What are the riches of God (vs 33)? What can you remember from the entire book of Romans that you treasure as God’s riches in your life?

Paul launches into this doxology, worshipping God, after deep theological discussion of the Jews and Gentiles (and a lot more from the entire letter). What does this teach us about theology and worship?

The Spirit and Dry Bones

Questions to accompany the June 7, 2026 sermon entitled: "The Spirit and Dry Bones" based on Ezekiel 37:1-14. Preached by Richard White.

          Sermon Questions: Ezekiel 37:1-14

What stands out to you in this passage about God? What about His people?

How is it good news that God meets us in our deadness, our graveyards?

Where have you said, in effect, “my bones are died up, my hope is lost, I am cut off [from….]?” What feels like a graveyard in your life right now?

Why do you think God asks Ezekiel, “Can these bones live?” What does that question address in Ezekiel?

Why is the process of restoration detailed in stages (bone to bone, sinews, flesh, skin, breath)? What might this gradual process teach us about how God works?

How do the elements of Word and Prayer work together in this passage?

What do you think about asking for the Holy Spirit’s repeated filling/empowerment? Do you think this is something that was limited to Pentecost or something we should continually and regularly ask of God? How does your answer fit with Jesus’ word about asking the Father for the Holy Spirit, Luke 11:13?

If your life was a house, where would the Spirit be in your house? To what extent is He ever consigned to a room?

What are some dry bone situations in your life, community, church? Are you willing, in these situations, to pray (prophesy to the breath) - Come, O Holy Spirit and to wait in hopeful faith on the Lord? If so, do so as a group.

          2 Corinthians 3:17-18

Is there a person who came alongside you that changed your perspective on things? …who taught you something that opened you to a whole new world or hobby or interest? …who pointed you to Jesus?

How would you describe your relationship to the Holy Spirit? What do you find weird or awkward talking about the Spirit?

How would you describe to a non-believer what the Holy Spirit is and does?

Jesus calls the Spirit, “The Helper” or “Comforter.” When is a time you’ve experienced the Holy Spirit in this way?

Old covenant life is marked by an endless obligation to a Law that we could never keep. Does your Christian faith ever feel like that? Do you ever find you slide back into old covenant thinking, believing God is only found on Sunday mornings?

Where do you feel the presence of God the Spirit most? Is there a story of experiencing the closeness of God’s presence?

The Holy Spirit brings the freedom in the power of the Gospel. What is it a freedom from? What is it a freedom for?

What freedom would you like the Holy Spirit to bring to you?

What does it mean to live to the glory of God? How does the Spirit help rearrange our priorities?

Filled with the Holy Spirit - Again!

Questions to accompany the May 24, 2026 sermon entitled: "Filled by the Holy Spirit - Again!" based on Acts 4:23-31. Preached by Richard White.

          Acts 4:23-31

Review Acts 4 and the story of Peter and John’s arrest. When they are released they call a prayer meeting. What does this reveal about the early church’s response to pressure, and how does it challenge the way we respond to stress or opposition today?

In their prayer they underscored God’s sovereign rule over creation and suffering. How does remembering God’s sovereignty shape your facing trying issues and decision making?

They pray Psalm 2 in their prayer. What does this teach us about weaving Scripture into our prayers? What scriptures are you praying out of for yourself and others?

Why don’t they pray for protection? Is it wrong to pray for protection? Why do you think they pray for boldness and opportunity (through God’s hand being extended)?

Vs 31 says they were "all filled with the Holy Spirit.” What is scary or off-putting to you about the Holy Spirit, or about how Christians talk about the Holy Spirit? What is inviting and helpful to you?

Look at Acts 1:4-5,8; 2:4; 4:8; 4:31. What does this suggest about the ongoing, repeated filling of the Spirit in a believer’s life? How does Luke 11:13 factor into all this? In what way is being filled with the Spirit the “normal Christian life?” Have you ever asked Jesus to baptize you or fill you with the Holy Spirit? Why or why not?

Where do you need Spirit-empowered boldness to speak for Jesus? Any conversations, decision, relationships, or acts of compassion where you need the Spirit’s power to live and witness to Jesus?

Not only did those praying receive afresh the Spirit, but vs 31 tells us that the place where they prayed was physically shaken. What might this symbolize about God’s presence, and have you ever experienced a moment where God “shook” something in your life — physically, spiritually, or emotionally?
